About

Biography

Born in El Kef, a Tunisian city on the Algerian border, Intissar Belaid is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Tunisia and Germany. In a world inundated with images, her work seeks to uncover and highlight those that embody the narratives of her region.

Intissar began her creative journey with embroidery, a craft passed down through generations of women in her family, which enabled her to address contemporary issues through an inherited tradition. Simultaneously, she engaged with moving images, initially using this medium to explore her gender and social status within her community. As her practice evolved, Intissar shifted her focus from personal to collective themes. Her eclectic approach challenges established interpretations of history, contrasting them with both personal and collective narratives.

Her participation in art residencies, notably at the SVALHOM (Denmark, 2016), Cité des Arts de Paris (France, 2018), and Gabés Cinémafen (Tunisia, 2021), has considerably shaped her approach. Intissar's work has also been shown internationally at film festivals, art galleries, and art fairs such as JCC Tunisia (2014), Zawiya Egypt (2016), Redzone Lebanon (2020), 1:54 London UK (2017), MIA Milano (2024), and “WHATIFTHEWORLD” Gallery, Cape town (2024).

Since 2017, Intissar has engaged actively with her community, conducting workshops across Tunisia with organizations such as Massarib, Generation Cinema, L'art Rue, and Cinema Madart. Involving participants of diverse horizons and ages. These workshops focus on connecting generations, fostering dialogue, and sharing her practice and research.
